US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland visited Niger and held talks with rebel leaders in power in the country.
CNN reported that on August 7, Nuland had a meeting with the appointed Chief of the General Staff of the Nigerien Armed Forces, Moussa Salau Barmu, as well as three of his closest associates.
The US deputy secretary of state is said to have had more than two hours of "extremely frank and sometimes difficult dialogue" with the military commander of the Nigerien rebels.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Nuland's main task during the trip is to find a diplomatic solution to the ongoing crisis in this African country. The senior US diplomat made multiple requests to meet ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, but the rebels refused.

US evacuates part of embassy staff in Niger
US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said the United States had evacuated part of its embassy staff in Niger.
“For the embassy in Niger, we have completed the relocation. We also helped about 100 US citizens leave Niger,” Miller said.
About 20 more Americans left Niger on flights organized by France, Spain and Italy.
The partial evacuation of the US embassy was announced after the Niger security forces arrested the President of the country.
